Painting Tutorial: Speed Painting, Quality Results

Posted By on May 20, 2011

INTRODUCTION

If you have some mad painting skills, you’re the type to pour hours and hours into each miniature you paint, you’re the type that wet blends dozens of shades and highlights into a miniature…

…Then this tutorial is not for you.  I suggest you move on with life, lest reading this actually makes your painting skills worse.

A Tale of Two Liches: Cryx in a Slow Grow League (Chapter I)

CHAPTER I – 15 POINTS

Just over a week ago, the Endless Gaming Slow Grow league began, and in typical SG fashion, started at the 15 point level.

I managed to get 3 games in, all using Iron Lich Asphyxious (if you’ll recall from my first post on the subject, I’m hoping to log some Venethrax playtime as well, but mostly vs. Hordes opponents).  During the 3 games, I lost twice to two different Khador players and won against a Retribution player.  At this point, the details of the games mostly escape me, so I won’t bore you with blow-by-blow battle reports.  But I will wax philosophical about my lists and games.

In the first game I brought:

Iron Lich Asphyxious

> Nightwretch

> Nightwretch

> Slayer

> Skarlock Thrall

Pistol Wraith

Bloat Thrall

The game was a close one vs. eSorscha.  Towards the end, we had whittled each other down pretty considerably and it became a slugfest between Sorscha and Asphyxious.  Because of an intervening wall giving us each +2 Def, we both wiffed a lot, but in the end, Sorscha brought the Iron Lich down.  I believe it took about 3 player turns of ‘Caster-on-’Caster dueling to end it, though.

For the second and third games, I decided I just didn’t have enough infantry-clearing ability, so swapped the two solos (Pistol Wraith and Bloat Thrall) for a min-sized unit of Bane Thralls.

The only thing to report about Game 2  was that I had about as bad of dice-luck as possible.  Seriously.  I don’t like to pin losses (or wins for that matter) on dice, but when your opponent comments mid-game that your dice rolling is so bad it is painful for him to watch, you can at least blame SOME of the loss on Lady Luck (or lack thereof).

Game 3 vs. Rahn of the Retribution was another game of attrition.  This time, though, luck was on my side and I was able to pull out a win in the end.  pAsphyxious’ feat is powerful against Retribution – the POW 5 damage roll is usually something you almost forget about because it is so ineffective.  However, vs. lower ARM units, that POW 5 can sure take a chunk out.   Sure, you may need 7s or 8s to kill a model, but if you can roll two dice a dozen times, you’re usually going to get some kills; in low-point games, those “few kills” add up to quite a bit.

Guess that’s it for “Chapter I – 15 Points.”  The League has escalated to 25 points, so I’ll be posting about my 3 games from this week shortly.  So Stay Tuned!

Asphyxious

PREFACE

With Terminus and Venethrax moving into the northern reaches of Immoren to recover a lost athanc hidden millennia ago by the Old Witch, Zevanna Agha of Khador; and with Malathrax securely sequestered in Asphyxious’ compound, he and Deneghra could return to larger-scale schemes and plans.  But first, Asphyxious needed Deneghra to return to where she had encountered the Old Witch to significantly cripple, if not wholly drive out, the Khadoran forces she first encountered.  Then, with that potential thorn removed, Asphyxious could continue plotting his ultimate rise to godhood…

INTRODUCTION

A Slow Grow (SG) league is starting today at Endless Gaming (EG) in Raleigh.  I plan to play Cryx for this six-week league; however, since I’ve played Cryx for some time now, my intention with the SG is to expand my Cryx repertoire by focusing on a couple new Warcasters, Units, Solos, and hopefully a ‘Jack (or two).  As with many other Slow Grow leagues, this one will escalate from 15 points (one week) to 25 points (two weeks) then 35 points (two weeks) and finally an “optional 50 point” level (one week – if not up to 50 pts, then continuing at 35 pts is also fine).

So what is a Cryx Player to do?!?  Read on to find out… (more…)

NC Gunbunnies Top Ten #5

Posted By on April 19, 2011

Well, I seem to be a tad behind these days, seeing as how I already have the sixth Top Ten compiled…  Well, onto #5!

1. Lonelymonk of The Monks Cave gives a good rundown of setting up and maintaining a wet palette

2. Broken Zealot Painting gives some more instruction into Speed Painting Quality Results (SPQR).  This has ME written all over it!

3. Privateer Press reveals one side of the Retribution’s Battle Engine’s card: a low DEF, but with 19 ARM and 20 Damage, looks like it’ll get a few shots off during a game

4. Shawn Houghtaling at Dice Rage gives a good video tutorial about making Blighted objective markers and fury tokens.

5. Lux at BoLS gives a good tactica for Legion of Everblight Striders (and a little about the Deathstalker).  Hmmm… that makes 2 Legion links in a row; trust me, it has nothing to do with my recent return to playing Legion…

Lanky’s Baking Corner: Templecon Edition

Posted By on March 18, 2011

So, Templecon came and went more than a month ago and folks are still talking about the cupcakes I fed the Press Gang (and a couple extra of the Lost Hemisphere boys). Not bad for something I managed to bake in a couple hours, if I say so myself.  What’s the secret? Rum Buttercream frosting. Yes. Rum + Butter + sugar + cream. But, it’s all in the technique.

The ingredients are simple:

  • 1.5lb (generally, one and one-half bags) powdered (Confectioners’) sugar
  • 3/4 c butter, room temperature
  • 6 Tbsp rum
  • 3 Tbsp milk or cream (or half-and-half)
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla extract (go for the good stuff, it’s worth it)

After the cut:  How to put it all together.

Tournament Announcement: Unexpected Allies, Mar. 12

Posted By on February 22, 2011

The battlefield is a chaotic place. One moment, you may be back-to-back with your comrade at arms, and the next moment, you stand alone against the enemy as your friend lays dying at your feet. Or you may find that you’ve got something in common with the fellow shooting back at you as a third and common enemy crests the hill, only to be back trading shots when the greater threat has passed. So be on guard, lad, but be hopeful. You never know when you might find yourself in the company of Unexpected Allies.

NC Gunbunnies Top 10 #2

Posted By on February 21, 2011

Time for another Top 10!

1. An amazing paint job by Deacis of Blighted Crusader that features an alternate scheme for the Protectorate (Black.  It’s the New Black…).

2. McCryx at McCryxian Domination discusses some of the ins-and-outs of the early stages of a game, particularly delving into why one should or should not try to be the first player (or second for that matter).

3. Ron at From The Warp discusses what a difference using “high quality brushes” has made for his painting routine (and admits to how wrong he was believing they’d be no better than standard/cheap brushes).  The article also has several good links to other discussions of brush quality.

4. BoLS rolls out a Protectorate logo sheet (printed on decal paper = symbol decals. BoLS also has Cygnar and Khador sheets, but alas, no Cryx yet…)

5. Fledgling (and “veteran”) bloggers would do well do read N++’s discussion of how to blog.  As a writer myself, I use many of these tips in my day to day job outside of my blogging persona. (more…)
