CHAPTER I – 15 POINTS
Just over a week ago, the Endless Gaming Slow Grow league began, and in typical SG fashion, started at the 15 point level.
I managed to get 3 games in, all using Iron Lich Asphyxious (if you’ll recall from my first post on the subject, I’m hoping to log some Venethrax playtime as well, but mostly vs. Hordes opponents). During the 3 games, I lost twice to two different Khador players and won against a Retribution player. At this point, the details of the games mostly escape me, so I won’t bore you with blow-by-blow battle reports. But I will wax philosophical about my lists and games.
In the first game I brought:
Iron Lich Asphyxious
> Nightwretch
> Nightwretch
> Slayer
> Skarlock Thrall
Pistol Wraith
Bloat Thrall
The game was a close one vs. eSorscha. Towards the end, we had whittled each other down pretty considerably and it became a slugfest between Sorscha and Asphyxious. Because of an intervening wall giving us each +2 Def, we both wiffed a lot, but in the end, Sorscha brought the Iron Lich down. I believe it took about 3 player turns of ‘Caster-on-’Caster dueling to end it, though.
For the second and third games, I decided I just didn’t have enough infantry-clearing ability, so swapped the two solos (Pistol Wraith and Bloat Thrall) for a min-sized unit of Bane Thralls.
The only thing to report about Game 2 was that I had about as bad of dice-luck as possible. Seriously. I don’t like to pin losses (or wins for that matter) on dice, but when your opponent comments mid-game that your dice rolling is so bad it is painful for him to watch, you can at least blame SOME of the loss on Lady Luck (or lack thereof).
Game 3 vs. Rahn of the Retribution was another game of attrition. This time, though, luck was on my side and I was able to pull out a win in the end. pAsphyxious’ feat is powerful against Retribution – the POW 5 damage roll is usually something you almost forget about because it is so ineffective. However, vs. lower ARM units, that POW 5 can sure take a chunk out. Sure, you may need 7s or 8s to kill a model, but if you can roll two dice a dozen times, you’re usually going to get some kills; in low-point games, those “few kills” add up to quite a bit.
Guess that’s it for “Chapter I – 15 Points.” The League has escalated to 25 points, so I’ll be posting about my 3 games from this week shortly. So Stay Tuned!
